01/02/09 - Coverage for “Other Drivers” on Rented Vehicles

by Diane Fikany of Encompass Insurance

When a customer rents a vehicle as a temporary replacement of his/her owned vehicle, the coverage automatically extends to cover this rental. However, contrary to the insured’s own vehicles, there is no coverage for “permissive use of non-owned vehicles.” Therefore, if our customer allows the rental vehicle to be driven by someone other than a driver listed on the policy, there will be no coverage allowed for any loss that occurs.

12/02/08 - Phone scam targets insurance policyholders

The Ohio Department of Insurance has confirmed an on-going scam targeting insurance policyholders. According to the ODI, the scam is currently targeted primarily at auto policies. In this scam, the caller alleges that "there was a problem with your insurance payment" and asks for confidential information such as bank account numbers, birthdates, SSNs, etc. The call often includes a threat that "your coverage will lapse" if the customer does not comply.

09/23/08 - Auto Insurance & Diminished Value

There is a concept with regards to damaged property - notably auto insurance claims. Even once repaired, the property (i.e. your automobile) isn't worth as much because it has been repaired. It might look exactly the same as before the accident. It might work exactly the same as before the accident. But you probably won't be able to sell it for as much as you could have immediately before the accident.

This situation is known as diminished value and it definitely exists. At Kelly Insurance, we understand this and respect that you may have questions about it. Please note, however, that this is a matter for the legal system. Insurance agents (at least in Ohio) are silenced on the matter because of our contracts with our companies and the legal precedence that could be implied if anything is mis-stated.

For a better description of diminished value, here is an article that does a great job describing it.

If you feel you have a diminished value claim, please communicate directly with your claim adjustor or seek legal help.
